65 years ago, one month after D-Day, a Halifax plane from 298 Squadron crashed in a village in France. All crew died on the scene. In this plane, which was full of ammunitions for the French underground, were three British and three Canadian airmen.

In March of 2001, Monsieur Alain Berthelot became mayor of this village – Larre (Normandy). Within months, he went to visit the two great Canadian cemeteries in Normandy (Beny-sur-Mer and Bretteville-sur-Laize) with the goal of finding out something of the background of the Canadians: Joseph Wilfried Fornier, William Linning, and Derwood Smith. Another Canadian who died in the village during the war was born in the same Canadian town as Monsieur Berthelot’s mother, and gave the mayor an interest in searching for the families of the airmen involved in the crash. The information he gained at the Canadian cemeteries was precise enough to enable a further search.

Since that time, Monsieur Berthelot and his wife, Catherine, have made four trips to Canada to visit the families of those Canadians who perished in the crash, and one family has made a return visit to Larre to pay tribute to the crew in front of the crash field.

Monsieur Berthelot’s research has revealed that Flying Officer Wireless Operator Air Gunner William Linning J20858 was actually born in Lethbridge, Alberta. On August 19 2009, the Berthelots visited Lethbridge to tell our citizens that, “somewhere in a small village in Normandy, a man from Lethbridge is not forgotten.”

Linning is buried at Breteville-Sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetary.
